A School, Important in every one’s
life. We all have very good memories about our school days. But now situation
is changed, competition has begun, everyone wants their children to go to the
best schools they can afford and have the best of education. Each and every parent
wants their child to be the topper.
Now can we just all stop and
think about our expectations, are they really require? What about our child’s mentally?
Are we encouraging our children or creating issue in their mental/ physical
growth?
In
my daily life I see students carrying heavy school bags, something inside my heart
I feel sympathy for situation. Growing numbers of children are developing
irreversible back deformities because of the weight of the bags they
carry to school. Half of all children suffer back pain by the age of 14 and
doctors are reporting a rise in cases of spinal abnormalities in pupils,
including disfiguring curvatures known as scoliosis.
In the study it has been suggested that school bag weight should to proportional to 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% of their own body weight.
Here is Body weight/Bag weight Ratio:
4 years – 16 kg(Body weight)- 1.6 kg(schoolbag weight)
8 years – 25 kg(Body weight)- 2.5 kg(schoolbag weight)
12 years – 37 kg(Body weight)- 3.7 kg(schoolbag weight)
16 years – 54 kg(Body weight)- 5.4 kg(schoolbag weight)
Here are some direct reasons responsible heavy school bags:
4 years – 16 kg(Body weight)- 1.6 kg(schoolbag weight)
8 years – 25 kg(Body weight)- 2.5 kg(schoolbag weight)
12 years – 37 kg(Body weight)- 3.7 kg(schoolbag weight)
16 years – 54 kg(Body weight)- 5.4 kg(schoolbag weight)
Here are some direct reasons responsible heavy school bags:
1. The number of test books, work
books and copies.
In the recent years, primary
level students now have textbooks or workbooks which are related to curricular
areas such as music, science and health education. A greater percentage of
textbooks now contain full color photographs, drawings and diagrams to make it attractive
and results in increase in weight of textbooks. Apart from this teachers are demanding
their own choice of textbooks, comprehensive worked examples and extensive
exercises for classwork and homework.
2. Additional Content of schoolbags.
Lunches, flasks, bottles, heavy
pencil cases, sports equipment, musical instruments, indoor shoes etc. must be
carried to school.
3. Weight of bag
The schoolbag itself constructed
from heavy material such as leather which results in overload.
4. Storage Facilities.
There is big issue in storage
space in school as there is no any compulsion in school building regarding
storage space for students such as locker space or storage space.
5. The Curriculum
The curriculum plays important
role. In the survey it is been proved that at junior class level subjects are increasing
which influence the weight of students schoolbags.
6. School organization and time
table requirements
92% of senior students were found
to lift their bags over 20 times a day. This situation is because of timetable,
according to class timetable students can have as many as ten different subject
period in the normal school day and attend them in different classrooms.
7. Other Reasons
Many times student at both
primary and secondary level carry textbooks which are not immediately necessary
to their requirements. Increase in homework policies may contribute to
unnecessary overloading of schoolbags. Students may employ incorrect lifting
and carrying techniques thus facing the problem of heavy back pain. Lack of
awareness in health education programs, as they do not sufficiently address the
areas of back care, correct lifting and carrying techniques and good posture.
To overcome the issue of heavy school bags
here are some suggestions to reduce school bag weight:
1. Lockers should be provided to
each and every level.
2. Facilities for evening study.
3. Double classes should be
arranged.
4. Teach students regarding proper
school bag arrangement.
5. Encourage students to share
books.
6. At least try to reduce the
number of subjects in junior level.
7. Storage facilities should be
provided e.g. pigeon holes, presses, baskets, shelves, old desks.
8. Establish a proper homework
policy and apply this on each subject.
9. Liaise with publishers in
order to activate a demand for smaller and lighter textbooks.
10. Create appropriate
timetabling policies to take account of the need to reduce the size and weight
of school bag.
11. Explore the feasibility of
providing duplicate copies of textbooks and frequently used resource books.
12. Monitor the weight of
schoolbag at suitable intervals.
13. Include correct lifting and carrying
techniques as part of their health education programs.
14. Instead of depending on book,
teach students to use internet for study so that they can keep knowledge current
and accurate.
We all believe & know that
children are the future. Thus the children should be groomed and educated
properly.
